10/02/2022 – Failed it to Nailed it! Beyond RDM – Organisation and Impact for Networks & Projects

This event is the first in our 2022 edition of the 'Failed it to Nailed it' series. This event takes a slightly different tack to our previous data sharing series, and is focused on going beyond traditional Research Data Management (RDM) and looking at how you can nail your network or project organisation and maximise your outputs and impact. This event will contain a series of talks on organising your projects, maximising your outputs and organising funding calls / sub projects. There will also be talks from industry professionals on how to use different systems to track and manage your research, including a talk about SciVal and Scopus. The event will also include an interactive panel session with Network co-ordinators from a range of networks who will discuss their experiences and recommendations from running projects. This event is aimed at people who have a role in organising a research network or project, or are looking to organise in the future. But registration is open to all and you are welcome to attend if you have an interest in any of the talks on the agenda! Although many of our examples will come from science and engineering, our talks are applicable across most domains.

This event is part of the virtual Skills 4 Scientists series run by the Artificial Intelligence for Scientific Discovery Network+ (AI3SD) and the Physical Sciences Data-Science Service (PSDS). This session will focus on an introduction to coding in python, using Jupyter notebooks and Anaconda. This course is designed to allow you to follow along with the content and examples as the course goes, but you will also be provided with course material to allow you to cover it again after the live event.

This year the AI3SD Network+ (Artificial Intelligence and Augmented Intelligence for Automated Investigations for Scientific Discovery) will be running a workshop at the WebSci20 Conference in Southampton, UK. Artificial and Augmented Intelligence systems have the potential to make a real difference in the scientific discovery domain however this brings a new wealth of ethical and societal implications to consider with regards to this research (e.g. human enhancement, algorithmic biases, risk of detriment). This workshop looks to explore the ethical and societal issues centered around using intelligent technologies (Artificial Intelligence, Augmented Intelligence, Machine Learning, and in general Semantic Web Knowledge Technologies) to further scientific discovery, with a strong consideration of data ethics and algorithmic accountability. Advances in technology and software are rarely inherently bad in themselves, however that unfortunately does not preclude them from being subverted to ill intent by others; furthermore, as demonstrated by the examples above, even an unintentional lack of care towards ethical codes and algorithmic accountability can lead to societal and ethical implications of scientific discovery. It is our responsibility as researchers to consider these issues in our research; are we conducting studies ethically? What ethical codes can we put in place for scientific discovery research to mitigate against ethical and societal issues. These are really important issues, and they require an interdisciplinary focus between scientists, social scientists and technical experts in order to be comprehensively addressed.

17/10/2019 – AI3SD & IoFT AI Technologies for Allergen Detection and Smart Cleaning within Food Production – SCI, London

This event is brought to you by the AI3SD (Artificial Intelligence and Augmented Intelligence for Automated Investigations for Scientific Discovery) and the IoFT (Internet of Food things) Networks. As food allergies and intolerances are on the rise, allergen detection and awareness is becoming more critical than ever at all stages of the food production pipeline; from cleaning the factories and kitchens the food is produced in, to detecting allergens in food, right through to creating allergen free food in the future. Unsurprisingly research has turned to technological solutions to combat this issue. This workshop is centered around the usage of Artificial Intelligence in Allergen Detection and Smart Cleaning within Food Production; research areas that co-align between both AI3SD & IoFT. The workshop will begin with some thought provoking talks to report on the current state of affairs, and consider where we need to be going in the future. There are five main working group topics identified for this workshop, and talks will be given on the different aspects that need to be considered with respect to allergen detection and smart cleaning before we break into the working groups for more formal discussions. There are multiple sessions for the working group discussions, and so there will be opportunities to take part in as many group discussions as you wish. The workshop will be formally recorded and the suggestions for going forward will be captured in a position paper. Lunch will be provided and the workshop will end with networking drinks.
